American programmers most often use AI to write code, a new study has shown.
The researchers developed an ML model to detect AI-generated Python functions and analyzed 80 million commits on GitHub created between 2018 and 2024 by 200,000 developers.
According to the study , as of December 2024, programmers from the United States generated the most code using AI — approximately 30.1% of Python functions.
Germany is in second place with 24.3%, France is in third place with 23.2%. They are followed by India (21.6%), Russia (15.4%) and China (11.7%).
The study also notes that new GitHub users are using AI more than veterans, and male and female developers are adopting it at the same rate.
Additionally, once developers use AI for 30% of their code, quarterly commits increase by 2.4%.
